TCF Canada – Speaking: What to Do On Exam Day
Feeling nervous before the TCF Canada Speaking test? Here's a simple, practical guide to help you warm up, respond confidently, and avoid common mistakes during the oral expression interview.
Before the Speaking Test
Sitting quietly before your Speaking test can make your voice feel "asleep." Use the time just before entering the interview to gently activate your voice and mind.
Warm up your voice (quietly)
Do a soft hum or mouth stretch (silent).
If you can visit the restroom beforehand, say 1–2 simple French lines aloud: « Je vais parler calmement. Je suis prêt. »
Switch your brain into French
Before checking in: Listen to a French podcast or call a French-speaking friend for 5 minutes outside the center.
Inside the waiting room: Narrate your surroundings silently in your head ("Il y a une chaise bleue," "La lumière est forte").
Important: Avoid chatting with other candidates once inside. Strict Candidate Rules may apply, and talking can be seen as misconduct.
Small physical resets
Take a sip of water before you are called in (bottles are often not allowed on the exam table).
Take a deep "belly breath" to lower your heart rate.
️ During the Test
Start strong
Use your first sentence to show clarity and confidence.
A calm tone + slight smile = positive first impression.
If you don't understand
It's completely allowed to ask again:
« Pardon, pourriez-vous répéter la question ? »
« Pourriez-vous reformuler, s'il vous plaît ? »
This shows professionalism, not weakness.
If you stumble
Don't apologize or restart.
Use a recovery phrase: « Je vais ajouter un autre point important… »
Then continue smoothly.
Keep answers structured
Use a quick, clear format: « D'abord… Ensuite… Enfin… »
Add one short example to sound coherent and mature.
